It’s Nuts ! A handful a day can chase the blues away.

You are a hard-pressed entrepreneur. You are up against it and losing money. You feel stressed and depressed; the dark clouds are descending. It is so bad it is affecting your work and performance.

What do you do to chase the blues away?

A handful of nuts a day

Simple. Take a handful of nuts and eat them!

This is the advice from a new study that says eating a handful of nuts a day can cut the risk of depression by nearly a fifth.

UK Biobank took data from 13,480 Britons on both nuts and depression. The research team is now pushing for clinical trials to determine the link between lower depression rates and nuts and find out what the optimal dose is.

Nuts ease stress

Spanish scientists believe the proteins and chemicals in the nuts could be responsible for their beneficial effects of reducing stress and boosting links in the brain as well as lowering depression.

Researchers say nuts are rich in amino acids: arginine, glutamine, serine and tryptophan and low levels of these amino acids have been associated with depression. In short, nuts can top up your levels.

How much should you eat?

The research recommends a serving of 30g of nuts every day. That is the equivalent of around five cashew nuts or 30 peanuts.

In 2019, a study also found that a handful of nuts, twice a week, could also cut the risk of dying from heart disease by a fifth.

A handful a day could not only keep the blues away but also prolong your life.
