When I first started out I needed to borrow money to fund my business plans. I can still remember to this day the first loan document I signed to borrow £15,000. I never knew that would be the start of a journey that would lead me to borrow in excess of £100m and teach me how to be a lender myself!

Now, more than 20 years later, I have lent in excess of £500 million pounds to more than 350 businesses. But most importantly for my customers, I know what it is like to sit on both sides of the table. 

I know what it is like to have a solid business loan refused for no good reason – just a stereotypical banker’s computer saying ‘NO’! And for that reason, my customers get to benefit from the unique situation of a lender who really understands what it is like to be a borrower – a business owner who has experienced most situations, not a bank manager who has just read a training manual.

My criteria

I am looking for established businesses that need capital for a good reason. I need to know why you need the money, what you plan to do with it and how you plan to pay it back. 

First and foremost, I only lend where my money is secured. I won’t part with a penny unless it is secured against a tangible asset. Whilst I always prefer property, I will consider other hard assets that give me the comfort I need. Plant, machinery, motor vehicles and debtor books have all featured in my lending at some point. 

I look to provide business loans of between £250k and £5m for any solid and sensible reason. To be clear, I only lend for business purposes, so if you need the cash to buy an engagement ring, build a new conservatory or go on a lavish holiday, look elsewhere! 

Finally, I only fund for shorter terms. Typically from 6 months to a maximum of 24 months. My interest rates start from 1.25% per month and I, therefore, need to know that you have a plan to get me paid off or refinanced in a sensible period of time.

What I need from you

  • A detailed story. Why the money is needed, what you will do with it and how you plan to pay it back.
  • Details of the asset you wish to secure the loan against 
  • Company accounts. (Ideally a minimum of 1 set of filed accounts and the latest management accounts)
  • Financial forecasts 
  • Bank statements (last 6 months)
  • Credit reports 
  • Anything else that will give me a clear financial picture and support your case.
