Despite global efforts to create a vaccine for the Coronavirus, a “silver bullet” may never happen, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
Governments and citizens should instead follow the established courses of action, including testing, contact tracing, face masks and keeping physical distance, the WHO warned yesterday.
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “we all hope to have a number of effective vaccines that can help prevent people from infection,” but added, “however, there’s no silver bullet at the moment — and there might never be.”
Speaking at a news conference, the director-general said, “for now, stopping outbreaks comes down to the basics of public health and disease control.”
The novel Coronavirus is said to have spread to some 18.1 million people, with close to 690,000 people dying from the disease since December last year. There is already talk of a Coronavirus vaccine, but nothing has been developed yet, and there is no guarantee that a ‘silver bullet’ will be found.
