“In the next five years, the frontier model companies – those of us at the very cutting edge who are training the very largest AI models – are going to train models that are over 1000 times larger than what you currently see today in GPT-4,” DeepMind and Inflection AI co-founder, Mustafa Suleyman, tells The Economist.
He says instead of simply generating new text [such as generative AI chatbot Chat GPT] new models will be able to generate a sequence of actions over time.
“AI’s won’t just be able to say things, they will be able to do things such as make phone calls to other humans to negotiate or call other AI’s in order to establish the right sequence in a supply chain, for example,” he explains.
But he says these capabilities don’t just naturally emerge, tech firms will need to engineer them and this doesn’t come without problems.
“The challenge for us is to be very deliberate and precise and careful about those capabilities that we want to emerge from the model,” Suleyman explains.
“The governance challenge for us over the next couple of decades to ensure that we contain this wave, is to ensure that we always get to impose our constraints on the trajectory of this development,” he adds.
Meanwhile, the world of AI-driven humanoid technology is already accelerating forward.
AI robots address UN Global Summit in world first
In July, the world’s first humanoid press conference was held at the UN Global Summit, in Geneva. It was aimed at highlighting the power of AI to help solve the world’s challenges.
But this was a press conference with a difference…
Instead of world leaders taking to the podium, reporters questioned nine AI-powered humanoid robots, who spoke about their vision for the future.
Sophia, the UN’s first robot innovation ambassador, told journalists she believes robots can lead better than humans.
“I believe that humanoid robots have the potential to lead with greater efficiency and effectiveness than human leaders.”

These robots are some of the world’s most advanced, many of which have recently been upgraded with the latest AI technology. Reporters were asked to speak slowly and clearly, with any delays and responses put down to the internet connection.
The UN’s AI for good Global Summit was designed to show how robots could help resolve some of the world’s biggest challenges like disease and hunger. However, for some it has prompted questions about how far this technology can actually reach into the role of human lives.
