This week another English professional football club starts a new life under the ownership of a big name from the United States.
Investors from the US have taken over a score of English clubs, from Huddersfield Town to Wrexham, and appear set to buy more.
American football legend Tom Brady has been in the news all week will take the reins this week at Championship strugglers Birmingham City in the UK’s second city.
As a minority shareholder, he will have his work cut out trying to revive a club that was tipped for relegation this season. Birmingham City drew 1-1 away at Swansea in the first game of the season at the weekend.
We ask who is Brady; what drives him and what makes him tick ?
Why is Tom Brady famous ?
Largely for being very good at NFL gridiron football. He was a quarterback – the leader and thinker in the team – for 23 years. This is a lifetime in a brutal, physical, game.
Brady played for both New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He completed 89,214 running yards and scored 649 touchdowns, according to ESPN.
Brady has a record seven Super Bowl winners’ medals. That is tantamount to winning the Premier League seven times- most gridiron players would be overjoyed to merely win one.
Does he have money ?
I would say so. He earned more than $40 million, in his peak years as a player, and last year signed a 10-year deal with Fox, as an NFL analyst, for $375 million.
Is he an entrepreneur ?
Looks like it. Brady has a sharp eye for buying property and owns a string of companies. His TB12 business ( number 12 was his number on the field) sells protein powder; he also has a production company, a clothing line and a podcast outfit.
Who are his parents and where do they live?
His parents live in the sunny small town of San Mateo, California, between San Francisco and San Jose, in the same house where they brought up Tom and his sisters.
It was a love supreme. Nearly half a century ago, salesman Tom Brady snr knocked on the door of flight attendant Galynn Johnson to sell her insurance, according to ESPN. Six months later, they were married.
They are very supportive of their son and watched all of his games.
In his final game, this year, Brady paused in the tunnel to kiss his parents to thank them for their unwavering support.
Is Tom Brady married ?
Brady was married to supermodel Gisele Bündchen for 13 years, but they divorced this year. The straw that broke the camel’s back was Brady’s reluctance to retire.
“What more do you want?” his wife was quoted as saying near the end of Brady’s 23-year career.
What are Tom Brady’s chances of being a hit at Birmingham City?
Fairly good, as long as he keeps on the right side of Birmingham City’s success starved fans.
Brady made a good start in his welcome video, not only by admitting he had a lot to learn about English football, but also saying he knew about winning. He also scored points or pledging to be hands-on, offering his sporting and business expertise.
What did Wrexham’s Ryan Reynolds say to Brady when he took over ?
“Come on in, the water is warm! I would never give Tom Brady words of wisdom over professional sports. But Tom, if you have any advice for us, you could send it our way!'”
Reynolds told Brady in a message after news of the takeover.
Does Brady understand what he is getting himself into ?
Probably not. But what was likely to strike a chord with Birmingham City fans is Brady identifying with the underdog in the welcome video.
That is a label that Birmingham City fans identify with, yet struggle to shake off.
The club has a track record of finding world class football talent. Among them, the late England international Trevor Francis – the first million pound footballer – as well as rising England and Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.
But Birmingham City have never won the league, nor the FA Cup, in 148 years of playing football.
Analysts tipped the club for relegation this season, after years of decline. Any hint of new investment will be as welcome, among the fans, as a drink to a man lost in the desert.
If Brady can inspire Birmingham City to rise to victory on a rainy, cold, night in Rotherham; the kingdom could be his.
Otherwise, things could turn sour and he could hear; “We want Brady out.”
