F1 Title Still Precious Despite COVID-19 Says Mercedes Chief

The F1 title may have been hit by the COVID-19 shortened schedule, but it will be equally precious in comparison to other seasons, according to Toto Wolff, CEO of Mercedes.

The team looks set to have its star driver Lewis Hamilton declared champion following his stunning win at Sunday’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Hamilton was able to overcome a deflated and shredded tyre during his last lap to beat Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. With four races finished, the racer is now ahead of his team-mate Valtteri Bottas by 30 points.

The F1 season should have had 22 races this season. However, it was cut to 13 after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the sport earlier this year. Still, the FI organisation hopes to be able to add more dates soon.

The BBC reported that Wolf said, “I don’t think any championship is less valuable than another one.”

He added, “you could argue a shorter championship means (you can afford) less faults and races where you don’t finish. For us and certainly for sports insiders, it is as valuable as any other.”
