Goal setting

If you want action, you need an action plan! Having clear goals gives a focus toward actionable behaviour & goal setting is the best way I know to turn ideas into bottom-line results.

Having worked with and studied successful people for nearly 20 years, it is clear that setting goals and mapping out how they will be achieved is a key part of their success. The process itself is not a one size fits all though as their goals are unique to their life’s vision.

Most people make resolutions & goals every new year, and many people make the same resolutions every year, without ever achieving them! There are many reasons why these goals are abandoned mid-January, they seem unachievable, unrealistic expectations, unmeasurable, or perhaps they were not specific enough.

Setting goals can help create a road map for success, providing targets toward which you point your life. Setting a specific goal will give you a starting point and a destination to reach.

However, if you want to achieve your goals they need to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and you need a time-frame in mind in which to achieve your goals.

I find that defining my goals gives me a target and positions me for real success; it puts me on a direct course of action.

Setting a goal should motivate you, and here are my tips for setting goals and, more importantly, achieving them.

Make your goals realistic

A goal worth pursuing is not something that anyone can easily talk you out of achieving.

Goals are reached one step at a time, and all actionable goals should fall within your overall vision.

Write down your goals

Seeing your goals written down and in your own handwriting is an important part of goal setting.

It helps you to see where you are going, what changes you need to make and if you are progressing towards your prize. If you don’t have a plan, how can you get to your destination?

The process of writing down your goals helps with clarity, looking at it often will also keep your goals at the forefront of your mind, therefore you will have more chance at achieving them.

Some people write their goals down on paper or create vision boards using pictures and words to help them visualise their goals.

Time-frame

Create a time-frame & deadline for every goal. This is an important one, if you don’t you’ll just have a bunch of goals floating around with no real deadlines, they’ll be ignored and put on the back burner every time.

Measure success

Measuring your goals progress will help you stay on track, seeing your target dates and experiencing the excitement of achievement will propel you to reach your goals.

Goal achievement requires a committed, concentrated and consistent work ethic to make your dreams a reality.

Ultimately the key secret to achieving your goals is getting started. Many people have goals and ambitions, but most don’t take action to achieving them.
